The AquaKing 100 litre foldable water tank is the entry size in this range, and the size at which collecting rainwater starts being worth the trouble. A hundred litres sounds like a lot until you see how quickly one shower fills it.

How fast a roof fills this tank

The arithmetic is simple: one millimetre of rain on one square metre of roof yields one litre of water. A modest 15 square metre shed roof therefore collects well over a hundred litres from a 7 mm shower, and showers like that arrive several times a month in a temperate climate. Divert a shed or conservatory downpipe into it and it fills in a single downpour. That is the point of this size: you do not fill it, the weather does.

Why rainwater suits plants better

Rainwater is naturally soft and carries almost no lime. Mains water across much of the country is hard, and that lime builds up in the pot and pushes your pH upward. Collected rainwater solves it with no filter and no running cost. The trade-off is that whatever falls in, stays in.

The zip lid is what makes the difference

An open barrel collects leaves, moss, insects and roof grit alongside the water, and all of it rots. This tank has a lid that zips across the whole top. Closed, it keeps debris out, limits evaporation and blocks the light that drives algae growth. Open, it unzips fully so you can see inside and clean it. Filling still happens through the inlet on top.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect it straight to a downpipe? It fills through the inlet on top, so a downpipe diverter and a length of hose works well. Make sure the overflow can discharge freely.

Does the water stay clean? With the lid zipped, leaves and debris stay out and algae get far less light. It will not be sterile: flush the tank at the start of the season.

Can it stay outside over winter? Drain it before the first frost. Water expanding as it freezes loads the seams and the tap.

Is it suitable for nutrient solution? Yes, the material is non-toxic. For an indoor growing setup a tank without the rainwater features is often more practical.
