The supplied overflow fitting sits high in the wall. Attach a length of hose and lead it somewhere water can do no harm: a drain, a border, or back into the downpipe below your take-off point. Can I route the overflow back into the downpipe? Yes, provided you connect below the point where you take water off. Otherwise the water circulates instead of leaving.

What happens if I do not connect the overflow? Water runs out of the opening in the wall and straight down the side of the tank. On a patio or against a wall, that is not what you want.
