What CTC 80 actually tells you

Carbon filters rarely carry numbers you can compare. CTC is one that you can, and it is worth knowing what it measures.

CTC stands for carbon tetrachloride activity. It is a laboratory test in which activated carbon is exposed to a saturated vapour and then weighed. The number is the percentage of its own weight the carbon took up. So CTC 80 means: a hundred grams of carbon absorbed eighty grams of vapour.

That is a measure of the carbon's internal surface and pore volume, and so of how much fits in before it is full. Higher is better, and 80 sits in the better class; cheaper carbon runs around 50 or 60.

What it does not tell you is how long your filter will last. That also depends on how much carbon is in it, how much air you push through and how humid that air is. A high CTC with little carbon lasts less than a lower CTC with plenty.
