A joint that also has to hold something up

Besides damping vibration, this sleeve does something less often considered: it holds together two parts that both have weight.

A 125 mm carbon filter soon weighs a few kilos, and in a tent that often hangs from the fan or from the same suspension point. The joint between them then carries part of that load, and unlike tape or a thin piece of ducting, here that is allowed.

There is still a limit, and it is often exceeded. Do not let the sleeve be the only thing holding your filter. Rubber creeps under sustained load, and a filter hanging from a sleeve for months eventually pulls the joint out of true. A gap then opens at the top where unfiltered air enters, exactly what the clamps were there to prevent.

So hang the filter from its own straps or brackets and let the sleeve only make the connection. In that arrangement it does what it is good at: holding the two parts airtight while staying flexible enough not to pass vibration on.

May my filter hang from the sleeve?
Preferably not as its only support. Hang the filter separately and let the sleeve just couple.

How tight should the clamps be?
Until the rubber dimples slightly. Tightening further does not improve the seal.

Will it fit 120 mm ducting?
It is for 125 mm components. There is some give for ducting sizes, but check the fit.
