One sleeve for two sizes, and why that works

150 and 160 mm are the two sizes most often confused in this trade: 150 is metric, 160 comes from six inches, and manufacturers do not all pick the same. With rigid parts that causes trouble, since a 150 steel flange will not go over a 160 pipe.

Rubber does not have that problem. The material stretches and takes the shape of whatever is pushed into it, and the clamps take up the difference. A centimetre of play around the circumference is nothing to rubber, while for steel it is the difference between fitting and not.

In practice that means two things. You do not need to know whether your fan is 150 or 160 before ordering, which at these sizes is regularly unclear. And you can couple a 150 part to a 160 part with this sleeve, which with rigid parts would need a reducer.

On the smaller size, tighten the clamps a little further and check that the rubber beds down all round rather than only on top.
