The noise that does not come out of your fan

An inline fan makes two kinds of noise. The first is air noise and you hear it coming out of the opening. The second is vibration, and it behaves differently: a spinning motor passes its own rhythm into anything it is bolted hard against.

Couple that fan to your carbon filter with a tight metal joint and the filter vibrates with it. If the filter hangs off the tent frame, the frame vibrates too, and a frame of hollow poles makes an excellent loudspeaker. The result is a hum audible in the next room while the fan itself is barely noticeable up close.

Rubber between two parts breaks that path. The vibration dies in the flexible material instead of carrying on into the next component. That is why this sleeve exists, and it is also why it belongs where the fan attaches rather than further along the ducting.

Sizing

The inner diameter is 205 mm and the outer 220 mm, across a width of 150 mm. That 205 inside is deliberately wider than the nominal 200: you slide the sleeve over the part rather than into it, which is why it works on anything that measures roughly 200 to 225 mm in practice. Then you pull up the steel bands supplied with it.

Because the rubber gives, the two parts do not have to line up perfectly. A fan hanging slightly off true, or a filter a few millimetres out of centre, costs you no air leakage here.

Where should it go?
Straight onto the fan, because that is where the vibration starts. Further down the ducting you are breaking a path the frame has already picked up.

Yes. It goes around the part rather than inside it, and works on outside sizes of roughly 200 to 225 mm.

How much quieter will my setup get?
That depends on your fan, your frame and your room, and nobody can put a figure on it. What you remove is the vibration travelling through the structure, not the air noise out of the opening.
