Two lighting schedules under one roof

As soon as you work from cuttings rather than seed, you meet a problem that has nothing to do with space: you need two different day and night schedules, at the same time.

A mother plant has to stay vegetative. That takes long days, usually eighteen hours of light and six of dark. A flowering plant needs twelve hours of uninterrupted darkness to keep flowering. Those two schedules cannot share a room, because at any given moment one is lit while the other should be dark.

Put them together anyway and something awkward follows. Your flowering tent is dark for twelve hours out of every twenty-four, and during those twelve hours you cannot open it. Do it anyway to water your mother plant and light falls into the dark period. Once is usually survivable, but doing it daily risks plants reverting to vegetative growth or setting seed pods.

A separate, light-tight propagation tent unties that knot. Your mother plant runs on her own eighteen hours, your cuttings sit alongside her, and your flowering tent stays untouched for its twelve dark hours. You can reach one without disturbing the other, and that is the entire reason this size exists.

Why 98 cm tall specifically

With 0.54 m² of floor and 98 cm of height there is room for a mother plant kept short by regular harvesting, plus trays of cuttings below or beside her. Taller is not needed: a mother left to run away gets hard to reach and yields cuttings from the top that you cannot pick without a step.

Secret Jardin advises 80 watts of LED for this size, 40 watts if you are only raising seedlings, and 20 to 80 m³/h of extraction. For a second growing level the Grid6040 is available as an option.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep a mother plant and cuttings in the same tent?
Yes, because both run on the same long light schedule. Only flowering plants need a room of their own.

Can I really not open my flowering tent in the dark?
Better not. Brief light during the dark period is seen by the plant, and repeated disturbance can upset flowering.

Will a shelf fit for a second level?
