Why a knife will not do here

Tent canvas is not ordinary fabric. It is woven polyester with a coated inner layer, and the two respond differently to a cut. Cut it freehand with a knife and two things happen: the weave frays along the cut, and the coating lifts away from the fabric at that edge.

The fraying does not stop by itself. Every time you connect ducting or move a fan you pull on that edge and the tear travels a little further. After a season a neat hole is a stretched hole, and the flange no longer seals against it.

The circle cutter solves that by putting the cut at exactly the right diameter. The clamping ring of the flange holder then covers the whole raw edge and traps it between two plastic halves. The edge cannot move, so it cannot tear further either.

In practice: fit the inner half of the holder first, use it as a guide, and cut only then. In that order you cannot wander off the line.
