The mesh is not an afterthought

Secret Jardin's full name for this part is Light Baffle with Mesh, and the second half tends to get dropped. Yet a passive intake is exactly where you need mesh.

Think about what a tent does. You extract air, which leaves a slight negative pressure inside. All the air replacing that loss arrives through your intake. That is one opening with outside air being pulled through it continuously, day and night.

Whatever travels in that airflow ends up at your plants. Fungus gnats are looking for damp substrate and find it through that opening. Thrips and spider mites are small enough to be carried along. And once inside they are in a warm, humid space with no natural predators: ideal conditions, only for them.

The mesh intercepts that at the source. That is considerably easier than dealing with an infestation later, particularly since in flower you no longer want to spray everything onto your plants.

Air through, light not

It also does what its name says. Air can turn a corner; light cannot. Light travels straight and is absorbed at each turn by the black interior. That gives you an open intake without light falling in at night.

Secret Jardin points out that a passive intake lowers your extraction needs: your fan works less hard against negative pressure, the air inside the tent evens out, and the canvas is not drawn inward.

Can I fit a fan to this?
This part is meant as a passive intake. If you want to blow air in actively, use an ordinary connector.

Does the mesh clog?
Dust can collect on it, as on any filter. Check it occasionally and wipe it clean, or the airflow will drop.

How many intakes do I need?
That depends on your extraction. For the larger tents Secret Jardin specifies a passive intake of roughly half your extraction rate.
