Why an open grid beats a solid shelf

A grid looks like a shelf with holes in it, but the holes are the point and they matter more than they appear to.

Stand trays on a solid base and the water that drains through your medium sits underneath them. That layer does not go anywhere, stays cold, and keeps the bottom of your pots permanently wet. It is where roots die back and where mould starts, and you cannot see it, because it is under the tray.

On an open grid that same water falls through to the tray below, and air can pass beneath the pots. The bottom of your medium dries out again between waterings, which is exactly what roots need: alternation between wet and airy, rather than permanently wet.

In a propagation space that counts for more than elsewhere. You are working with many small containers at once, watering little and often, and young roots have no reserve to survive a misstep.

Where it fits

The shelf measures 60 × 40 cm. In the DP120 three sit side by side per level, together making up the 120 × 60 cm floor exactly, and that tent comes with twelve of them for four levels. For the DP90 Secret Jardin lists the shelf as an option. The DP60 has a floor of precisely 60 × 40 cm, but is not listed by the manufacturer as a model with a shelf option.
