The three PatchIT sizes are named after the flanges they belong to, but this largest one has a second life: it is the only one that can take on a real tear.

Canvas rarely tears by itself. It happens when an assembled tent is moved, when a zip jams and gets pulled too hard, or at a corner where a filter bracket has rested for years. Then you have a tent with nothing else wrong with it and one place where light gets through.

At 350 mm you have enough material to take over such a spot with generous margin all round. Two things decide whether it works:

• The tear must fit well inside the patch, not just barely. The adhesive has to sit on undamaged fabric all round, or the tear travels on under the edge.
• Bond both sides. A tear patched only from outside keeps moving on the inside and works itself loose.

For anyone buying a second-hand tent this is the part that separates a bargain from a mistake: one tear and a few unwanted ports are all fixable with patches.

Frequently asked questions

Can I repair a 30 cm tear with this?
That is tight. With a 350 mm patch you would have almost no margin left, and it is exactly that margin which stops the tear.

Is it suitable for a smaller hole?
Yes, larger is always allowed. For a CF7 or DF16 opening a smaller set is simply cheaper and tidier.

Will the tent still be lightproof afterwards?
Yes, provided you use both patches and bond onto clean, dry fabric.
