Flowing rather than standing

What sets it apart from most systems is movement. In a classic arrangement the nutrient solution sits in a reservoir and is delivered to the plants periodically. In a flow system it runs continuously past the roots and back to the reservoir.

That has two consequences. First oxygen: moving water picks up air on the way and holds it, where standing water loses oxygen. Second consistency: no spots develop where the solution warms or something settles, because everything is permanently in motion.

For the roots that means a constant environment rather than a cycle of wet and dry. It is a different philosophy from, say, an AutoPot, and both work; the difference is whether you steer for alternation or for stability.

Ten positions on one reservoir

All ten plants share the same flowing solution, so they all get the same EC, pH and temperature. You measure and correct in one place. Put plants with comparable needs in it, since individual adjustment is not possible.

What a flow system asks of you

The system runs continuously, so it depends on power and a working pump. Against that, there is little to set: no timers, no watering schedule, no substrate to flush.

Keep the reservoir clean and the solution topped up. In a system where everything is shared, a problem in the reservoir reaches all ten plants at once.
