The 2 inch net pot is the component that holds your plant in place in a hydroponic or aeroponic system. Open on all sides, made from recycled plastic, and reusable indefinitely.
Why a pot full of holes
On an ordinary pot the wall exists to keep substrate and moisture in. On a net pot that is precisely not the intention. The pot should carry the plant and otherwise get out of the way, so roots can grow through it unhindered to the nutrient solution or mist below.
Hence the open mesh. Roots go through it rather than around it, and the plant still stands upright because the collar holds it.
Adding clay pebbles
You fill the pot with clay pebbles for extra support. They hold the stem base in place and give young roots something to run along, without retaining moisture the way compost does. On a larger plant that is the difference between a stem standing firm and one that tips.
Reusable
Net pots last indefinitely. Rinse them between crops, since algae and nutrient residue cling to the mesh, and use them again.
