The Cosmorrow INFRARED is a waterproof 50 cm LED bar of 20 watts on 24 volts emitting far-red light. Secret Jardin supply it as supplementary lighting rather than as a main light.

What far-red does to a plant

Far-red light sits just beyond the red your eyes still register well. A plant does see it, and uses it as information rather than as fuel: it tells her something about the time of day and about the neighbours.

Two effects follow. The first is day length. In nature the light at the end of the day is relatively rich in far-red, and a plant reads that as the close of the light period. A short dose of far-red after your main lamp goes out brings the plant into its night state sooner, which is why it is used to help flowering along.

The second is stretch. Far-red is also the signal that neighbours are standing over you, and a plant answers that by growing longer and reaching for the light. That can be useful when you want more height between the nodes, and it is precisely what you do not want when your crop is already getting leggy.

So this bar belongs on its own timer, separate from your main lamp. That is what Secret Jardin themselves advise: use it deliberately, briefly and at a chosen moment, not running along all day.
