Why this bar must not share your main lamp's timer

It is tempting to put this bar on the same socket strip as your main lamp. One switch, one schedule, done. That is exactly what not to do, and the reason is that far-red on this fixture is a signal rather than extra light.

A signal only works if it arrives at the right moment. Far-red burning through the whole light period tells your crop for twelve hours that the day is ending and that neighbours are overhead, and the answer to that is stretch: longer stems, more space between nodes, a crop growing upward instead of filling in. The same bar that helps you at the right moment works against you when it is always on.

So the practical arrangement is simple. Give it its own timer and let it run briefly around the time your main lamp goes out. At ninety centimetres it covers a good part of a tent in one go, so one bar is usually enough, even where your main lighting is several fixtures.

Do not run it at the same time as the UV bar if you have one. Those two push your crop in opposite directions where stretch is concerned.
