What happens when you choose too small

The 20 watt and 40 watt supplies look alike and take the same connector. Which makes it tempting to buy the smaller one and hope it fits. Physically it does: a 40 watt bar clicks onto a 20 watt supply without any resistance at all.

Electrically it does not. A supply asked to deliver more than it was built for runs hot, gives an unstable voltage and lasts considerably less long. At best you notice a bar giving less light than it should. At worst you have given a component that warms up a permanent place in a humid growing space, and that is not a risk worth the saving.

The rule is simple and has no exceptions: add up the wattage of the bars you are connecting and choose a supply that can carry it. One 40 watt bar belongs on this set. Two 40 watt bars belong on the 2x40W version, not on two small supplies tied together.

The other way round is fine. A heavier supply with a lighter bar is no problem, because a supply delivers what is asked of it and no more.

Can I run a 40 watt bar on the 20 watt supply?
The plug fits, but do not. The supply is overloaded, runs hot and lasts less long.

Yes, that is no problem. A supply delivers only what the bar asks of it.

Is this power supply waterproof?
No. The supply is IP54, so dust and splash resistant. The LED bars themselves are IP65 and may get wet.
