Plagron - Super Mix

A solid organic fertiliser of feather meal, bone meal, guano, maerl, bentonite, basalt, seaweed meal and lava meal, with worm castings. You mix it through your substrate rather than dissolving it.

You are feeding the soil life with this, and only in peat

With liquid feed you give the plant something it can take up at once. Super Mix works one step earlier in the chain: the components have to be broken down by fungi and bacteria before anything is released. That is why the stated NPK is so low, 1-2-0, while it is sold as a complete fertiliser. The number measures what is immediately in there, not what the soil life will draw out of it over eight weeks.

Two limits come with that, and they are often left out. First, this works in peat substrates only. Coco does not hold that decomposing soil life in the same way, and your fertiliser largely just sits there. Second, it does not belong in a fresh, pre-fertilised bag. That has its own starter charge; adding a slow layer on top is how you make a pot too rich without seeing it happen.

Where it does belong: in a lean mix, in potting soil you are reusing, and in open ground.

It is one of four, not a replacement for the other three

Plagron deliberately place Super Mix alongside worm castings, bat manure and a lime product, each with a different job: stimulate soil life, bring in nutrition, and bring the pH up to level. Super Mix is the broad base of that set. That is a different thing from a product that makes the rest unnecessary, and that claim used to sit on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix this through coco?
No. Plagron state that Super Mix is for peat substrates. Coco lacks the soil life that has to break this fertiliser down.

Can it go into a fresh bag of pre-fertilised potting soil?
Better not. That bag already has a starter charge. Save Super Mix for your second cycle or for a lean mix.

How quickly will I see something?
Not quickly, and that is the intention. Reckon in weeks, not days. This is not a product for repairing a deficiency.

Does this replace my liquid feed?
Partly, in an organic setup. But treat it as the base the rest connects to, not as a product that makes worm castings or guano unnecessary.
