Measuring & Control — Calibration Fluids

Calibration fluid is not an accessory, it is the reference your whole measurement rests on: without a known value to set itself against, your instrument does not know what it is reading. What you need is a short list: two buffers for pH, one standard for EC, and storage solution for the electrode in between.

Two points for pH, one for EC

For pH you calibrate on 4.01 and 7.01, both of them, because a single point fixes where the meter sits but not how steeply it runs. Both are here as a Milwaukee sachet, as a 100 ml bottle, and from Bluelab in 250 and 500 ml. For EC, 1.413 is the usual standard, the Bluelab kits work with 2.77, and EC 12880 is there for meters calibrated at a higher value.

Sachet or bottle

A 20 ml sachet is a single portion: open, use, discard, and nothing in it can spoil because nothing stays in it. A bottle is for anyone who calibrates on a fixed schedule and would rather not check each time whether there is enough left. The fluid is the same; the difference is how often you do this.

Used fluid does not go back in the bottle

Pour a little into a cup, measure in that, discard what you used. Whatever the electrode has touched is contaminated, and pouring it back once makes the rest of the bottle unreliable without anything about it looking wrong. Rinse the tip between one calibration point and the next as well, or you carry 4.01 into the 7.01.

Storing and cleaning

Between readings a pH electrode belongs wet, in KCl storage solution, available on its own in 100 ml and in the version Bluelab makes for its own meters. If the electrode has gone slow or restless, cleaning and recalibrating is the next step rather than replacement. The Bluelab kits come for pH with pots and pH 7.0 fluid, for EC with EC 2.77 and cleaner, and as a set covering both. If it still will not hold, the separate electrodes are under pH Meters.

Frequently asked questions

Which value does my meter need?
The one in its manual. For pH that is almost always 4.01 and 7.01; for EC, 1.413 is the common standard and the Bluelab kits use 2.77. Calibrating to a value your meter is not set up for pushes it off rather than onto true.

Why does one bottle say 4.0 and another 4.01?
That is the same lower calibration point, labelled differently. Follow the value your meter asks for while calibrating. Buffers are specified at a reference temperature, so let the fluid come to room temperature before you start.

How long does calibration fluid keep?
As long as the bottle stays closed and clean and nothing has been poured back in. Keep it cool and dark with the cap on: an open pH buffer takes up carbon dioxide from the air and drifts away from the value on the label.
