If your calculation lands around 400 or 500 cubic metres per hour, this is the band you should be shopping in, not the one below. That sounds like upselling and it is not: the figure you arrived at applies to a bare fan, and between that fan and your tent there will be a filter, a few metres of ducting and a handful of bends.

Why you buy a band above your calculation

Every part in the run costs pressure. The carbon filter costs most, and it costs more as it loads up, so what is right on day one is tight six months later. Buy at your calculation and your fan runs flat out from the start with nothing in hand. Buy a band higher and you turn it down and keep the reserve.

What is in this band

From Can-Fan, the RK and RK S in the middle sizes, the pre-damped Iso-Max 150 and 160, and the Max Fan Pro 150 at 600 cubic metres per hour. From Vents, the VK and VK DUO in Ø150 and Ø200 and the TT Pro. On filters, the Can-Lite in its middle sizes, Prima Klima, Rhino and the AC Infinity versions including XL.

Around this airflow a fan becomes audible in a house. Silencers come in these sizes, and the Iso-Max solves the problem at source by already sitting in an insulated jacket. Count a silencer into your calculation, because it adds resistance too.

Diameter follows your choice, not the other way round

Frequently asked questions

My calculation says 450. Why not just buy 450?
Because that figure applies to a bare fan. With a filter, ducting and bends you keep less, and as the filter loads up, less again.

Is a bigger fan not louder?
Not if you turn it down. A generous fan at half power is quieter than a tight one flat out.

Ø150 or Ø160?
Building new, Ø150 gives more fan choice and Ø160 more filters and ducting. Reducing between the two costs pressure, so pick one.
