Choosing a carbon filter looks like arithmetic on airflow, and it is only half that. All three Can-Filters lines we stock cover comparable throughput; they differ in housing, weight and service life, and that is what decides whether the thing can hang off your tent frame at all.

Can-Lite, Inline and the original CAN

The Can-Lite is the light line, from 150 to 1500, and the usual choice in a tent because the weight stays manageable. The Inline series has a plastic housing and runs from 300 to 1500. The original CAN filters, the BFT and PL builds, are the heavier class: more carbon, more weight, longer service life.

Weight is a real constraint, not a detail

This is why the Can-Lite exists. A tent frame has a limit, and a heavy filter plus a fan plus a light on the same frame adds up. Hanging from a ceiling or your own structure removes that limit and puts the original CAN back in play. Hanging in a tent, check what your frame carries before you look at throughput.

How you know a filter is finished

Activated carbon saturates, and not on a schedule. How much air you pull through it and how loaded that air is decide the life, so two identical filters in two rooms will not last the same time. The practical indicator is smell: if it comes back while nothing about your setup changed, the carbon is done. A saturated filter does not break and does not look different, which is why people run them long past the point.

Frequently asked questions

What throughput does my filter need?
At least that of your fan, and preferably a little more. A filter sized too tight restricts extraction and saturates faster.

Can I pair a Can-Filter with any fan?
Yes, as long as the flange size matches. We stock Can-Fan's Fast Clamps separately, and they couple more widely than their own brand.

Is a plastic housing worse than metal?
No, it is a different trade-off: lighter and immune to corrosion, against the heavier build of the original CAN.
